The neighborhood is abuzz!
As the owners of ONE Liberty Place and The Shops at Liberty Place, Metropolis Investment Holdings Inc. would like you to meet our new rooftop neighbors: honey bees! We’ve teamed up with Alvéole to move toward a more eco-conscious city, and give back to our community, by taking bees under our wing and hosting two hives on our rooftop at The Shops at Liberty Place.
Urban beekeeping takes flight:
- The population of honey bees, bumble bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are in rapid decline all over the world. Unfortunately, several species of bees are at risk for extinction in North America.
- More than 75% of the world’s food crops rely on pollinators. Through their pollination, bees not only promote biodiversity, but they also secure our food supply.
- Bee colonies flourish in urban areas because these environments lack pesticides, have an abundance of water and floral resources, and provide a temperate climate.
- Beekeeping was traditionally an agricultural practice based on the economic benefits of honey production. Today, urban beekeeping largely exceeds economic necessity and helps raise awareness surrounding industrial agriculture and its devastating impact on the environment.
Honey, there’s good news!
Thousands of our new winged friends will be hard at work this summer, pollinating the urban flora that surround us, improving our food supply, and helping biodiversity! At the end of the season, we will harvest their honey to share with our community and tenants.
